OUR STORY
Mawei was founded by Jenny Wei Ma in 2025. Jenny grew up in Shanghai, a city shaped by both Chinese tradition and Western influence, and moved to Fredrikstad, Norway with her family more than ten years ago. She found the inspiration for Mawei in the meeting between her two worlds: Chinese roots and Scandinavian simplicity.
Jenny’s love for cashmere grew out of her own experience with knitwear production in China. Through Mawei, she wanted to share her fascination with the craftsmanship, tradition, people and knowledge behind every cashmere garment.
Mawei’s philosophy is that garments and accessories from current and previous seasons can be combined and worn in different ways. A garment from an earlier collection should have the same value as a new design.
Each garment is intentionally developed for versatility and longevity, with a strong focus on material knowledge, craftsmanship and refined finishing.
Our Mawei stamp, the embroidery under the back neckline, is inspired by the traditional Chinese Yinzhang (印章) - the personal seal. In Chinese culture, the seal represents identity, origin and responsibility for one’s work. Jenny wanted to bring a small part of her Chinese heritage into Mawei, and Bjørn Rybakken reinterpreted the symbol with a contemporary clarity that became the visual identity of Mawei. Today, the stamp expresses authenticity and respect for the people and the craftsmanship behind Mawei.
Made to be worn, cherished and returned to, year after year.
