Mawei represents the beautiful convergence of two worlds.

Founder Wei Ma's upbringing in Shanghai, surrounded by Chinese tradition and Western influence, combined with her life on Norway's south coast near the pristine Hvaler archipelago, creates a unique perspective. This landscape of sea, light, and wind, paired with her passion for cashmere, has inspired garments that embody both the warmth of her heritage and the clarity of Scandinavian design. Each piece is designed and crafted to deliver versatility and timelessness, with sustainability at its core. Mawei implies passion, integrity, and self-awareness. Its unique identity is inspired by the traditional Chinese signature stamp - yinzhang, which dates back more than 3600 years. The stamp is reinterpreted by partner and brand designer Bjørn Rybakken through a clean style and thoughtful contrasts, reflecting both cultural heritage and contemporary clarity.
Mawei celebrates meaningful contrasts: East and North, heritage and modernity, softness and simplicity. Made to be worn, cherished, and returned to year after year.


SUSTAINABILITY. Every Mawei piece is designed in Norway and crafted in China with great care and expertise. Working closely with trusted suppliers and production partners, Mawei combines its knowledge, experience, and cultural understanding with modern technology to ensure the highest quality and craftsmanship.
We use sustainably sourced cashmere from a natural fibre yarn supplier recognized for its commitment to quality, innovation and responsible practices - a trusted partner and member of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance and The Good Cashmere Standard.

Our fibres are responsibly harvested from Hircus goats raised in Inner Mongolia, a region known for producing the world’s finest cashmere. After being gently combed, the raw fibres are carefully sorted, washed, dyed, and spun into the premium yarn used in our garments.
Each batch is tested to meet the highest standards of softness, strength, and durability. Our yarns are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, ensuring they are free from harmful substances.

For us, sustainability is about long term responsibility. We value tradition and heritage, and we see our yarn supplier not just as a producer, but as a key partner in maintaining transparency and care across our supply chain.


THE TIMELESS STORY OF CASHMERE. Cashmere is one of nature’s finest materials, known for its incredible softness, warmth, and lightness. It comes from Hircus goats, which live in some of the harshest climates of Mongolia, China, and Nepal. These goats grow a soft, insulating undercoat to endure freezing winters, and every spring, herders carefully comb the goats to collect this precious fiber.

Each goat produces only 150 to 200 grams of cashmere annually. This limited supply, combined with its exceptional properties, makes cashmere rare and valuable. It’s eight times warmer than wool, incredibly lightweight, and naturally adapts to body temperature, offering comfort in all seasons.

For centuries, cashmere has been central to the lives of the nomadic herders who pass down their traditions through generations. Their work is about preserving a balance between people, animals, and the environment.

Cashmere has a rich history, from being traded along the Silk Road and prized by royalty and nobility for its elegance and quality. Today, while production has evolved, the craftsmanship and heritage behind it remains. Modern efforts focus on innovation and sustainability -protecting goat habitats, supporting herders, and reducing environmental impact.
